Hello Frank,
I added the topviews of the battle-maps, from Rensei's little app. I tried placing them both in a "standard" way (floats) and in a "gallery" way (clicking magnifies using a default stylish box with next/previous also available). I didn't use the grey image-box, because I would have needed to combine the maps in one big image (does it work with multiple images too?)
Which one do you prefer? I'm a little for the "gallery" way, with perhaps a little shrinking of the magnified versions (800x800 —> 400x400) so that they fit better on-screen (and load faster!).
Do you think they should appear in a different way/page? e.g. on the battle/deployment section?
Alex
Nope, the gray box only works with one image.
I like that gallery thing and its image pop-ups, but I was thinking that the top views would appear next to each map. Here's an example. What do you think?
My example would look a lot better without the white borders on the images, but we could always go back and crop the images later.
Wow, this is much better!
The white-borders where added so that all images would be of the same size (800x800) that helped also for relative comparison of maps. I will crop the borders (or make them PNG/transparent), no prob; do you think we should shrink them a little too? (say ~600px or 400px)?
I think the size of the (full-size) images is probably okay. On my phone the popup/lightbox doesn't scale beyond the screen, which is good. However, on a small desktop window/screen, part of the image is cut off. Apparently, Wikidot do not plan to fix this issue. Anyway, yeah, shrinking them might be a good idea.
One problem with my example is that folks may not realize that the image is clickable. I suppose we could have something at the top of the page mentioning that.
OK. I'm gonna give them a small shrinking (i.e. 800—>600px) and make the white-edges transparent. Yeah, we should add a text like "click to enlarge", or perhaps add a colored-border to the thumbnails (or the actual image) that kinda draws the attention/mouse to it.
Hrm, it sort of has a border already, added by the gallery. Maybe it stands out enough already? Try out a glow if you're so inclined, and feel free to use the same scratch page or start another.
With a wikidot gallery, I'm pretty sure we can't add text near the image; here's the relevant part of the doc. There aren't a lot of customization options.
It's a pretty small problem if folks miss the opportunity to click. And I think the current border (from gallery) and some mention at the top are probably good enough.
Damn! The PNG-transparency shows up as white in the thumbnails of the "gallery" clips. So I'll just have to crop-out those areas… No big deal, but I'll get round to do it tomorrow or the day after. It's Easter Sunday tomorrow in Greece ;-)
Alex
Have a good holiday!
It might just be Wikidot being slow to update, in which case the problem will fix itself.
Thanks Frank. Have a good one too!
