This is the discussion page for: matches
Edit this page like any other, or add comments at the bottom. The idea is that comments will relate to short-term issues with editing the main page (typos, formatting, etc.); while the body of the discussion page will contain different users' long-term opinions on the subject of main article (strategy for using a unit, etc.).

I have recently expanded this matches page that addresses the match-types, the timer and the matchmaker (to be expanded too, possibly a snapshot of the screen too). However, there is this "stub" page dealing only with the timer.
I was wondering if we should somehow merge/fuse it with respective content in this Matches page, or just leave it there… What say you?
The matches page looks good, albeit very very long. :) I outlined the structure I was going to use to fill it in (if no one else did) over here a couple of days ago after our conversation on the forum about Elo. If you're up to it, you might want to work on the Rankings page next.
I think the timer page can be deleted or left alone. I just removed the only link that went to it. There's a delete option in the buttons at the bottom of each page. As you'll see if you try it out, you can "delete" a page without actually removing it (just moving it to category "deleted").
About the matches page: OK, I am gonna try to shorten it a little bit, just keeping the basic info, and see how it looks. Perhaps adding a TOC at the beginning will make it easier to scale, and also better highlight the Timer & Matchmaker parts.
Gonna work on the Ranknings page next, when I'm up to it. Say, I was wondering if there is any simple "applet" thing possibility in this wikidot, you know, to have two editable-boxes where you give the opponents Elos and say who won, and it returns the Elo-change for each one. I guess its difficult, but just asking!
Concerning the Timer page, lets leave it be for a short while; unless nobody complains about it, we can then phantom it out (category "deleted").
Cool cool. Probably difficult to do that natively in Wikidot, but you could embed an applet made with other online tools, I bet.
Hello Frank,
I remember you mentioned putting in the match-maker some "nerdy" stuff about how the matchmaker's opponent-search algorithm works. I imagine it's stuff like (for QMs):
If there's a relevant forum thread, please refer me there.
Alex.
Yeah, I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but I was thinking…say what those numbers are and then explain by example who gets matched, using a graph.
On the graph, you could have axes for ELO and team power. Each player starts at a point (e,p) on this graph and then expands his/her search to a rectangle of this space that increases in size over time. A pair are matched as soon as
At least that's how I thought it worked based on the stuff both of us have read. :) Like the ELO thread.
Some additional details:
Since Stoic haven't posted a thread about this in a long time (so I don't think there's anything fully up-to-date on the forums), maybe — if you want to get into this geekery — it would be quickest to just start a thread asking whether or not this is how it works, and what the relevant numbers are. You could copy this post as my best guess if that helps.
OK Frank. Thanks for the *always* thorough response! You circle-visualization is interesting. I could do a GIF-picture of sorts with 5-6 frames to demonstrate how it would work…
I'll start thinking about it and then proceed, perhaps firstly by a forum-thread. The traffic is quite low nowadays on the game (as is the devs' activity on the forum), so making the matter-at-hand of marginal interest…
I'm generally quite busy this time of the year (writing my thesis) so I won't be around for big-stuff :(
Alex
By the way, regarding the calculator you mentioned before. It might be possible by embedding a calculator from another site, as described here: http://snippets.wikidot.com/code:instacalc
EDIT: Okay, it does work; see the scratch page. Nice going keeping things up-to-date on the site!
Great, thanks! I will try to put it somewhere on the rankings page asap.
Alex
Hey Frank.
I added the Instacalc applet in the Rankings page (after the formulas), tuned for Elo-rating calculation. I put it inside a collapsible-block to reduce the initial page-size, with a grey div-block to highlight it a bit. What do you think?
I think there's no way to "hard code" the initial applet-code into our wiki-page; it just invokes a saved instance of the code I made, e.g. here. Can you edit it there (and have the effect pass on our wiki-page)? If yes, someone could potentially/accidentally screw it up, right?
Alex
Looks great! You could instead put it on its own page and then [[include]] it here as well. That way, folks could link directly to it from the forums or wherever. Either that, or just un-hide it…or just hide the explanation part. I'm thinking the extra scroll down+click is more work than it needs to be.
I tried tampering with it, but didn't see any effect on the wiki. However, we know that wikidot does some really slow updating of cached stuff, so it could be that the changes just take a while to take effect. Anyway, I don't think it's worth worrying about it. You could hard-code your equations somewhere on the website (maybe on a dedicated page for the calculator) with a comment:
So, if/when it's lost or tampered with, it's easy enough to replace. At least it's already here in this comment!
